Changing a life may mean changing your perspective on how things are done. That's what Terry Baker did at the International Wine, Beer, and Food Festival. Terry, the husband of the ShowSpan-Show Manager Dawn Baker, is no novice to the International Wine, Beer, and Food Festival. The motivated, baseball loving, fitness junkie, and passionate family man saw an opportunity where many others found just another empty bottle.
The show, also known as the Grand Rapids Wine Festival, is the Midwest's largest giving individuals the opportunity to try some of the elite wine, beer, cider, ale, lagers, and spirits that they may otherwise not have the chance. With all this variety of vendors and flavors, the trash began to fill up quickly over the course of the weekend. This sparked the idea of returning the empty bottles that had a deposit and use the funding to support the Michigan Make-A-Wish. What was my role in this awesome idea? After my shift ended while working the festival I assisted in the emptying the bottles and stacking boxes upon boxes on flatbed carts. As I said there were many flavors of beer with colors and aromas that when mixed together made one interesting elixir that I had no interest in trying. When the small team had finished tetrising boxes onto the cart, we wheeled the carts through the narrow doorway and to the loading dock where a Uhaul truck was waiting. I had a great time learning more about the Wine Festival and the importance of seeing the larger picture. By taking the initiative to do something so simple, it provided funding for the Make-A-Wish organization to impact a child's life. This opportunity inspired me to ponder on other situations I find myself and see if there are small changes I could make to create a bigger impact. Shoutout to Terry for such a great idea!
