The Ferris State University Student Government Association (FSUSGA) helped provide over 80 children with personally decorated sweet-cases. With help from students across campus the FSUSGA raised more than $2,000 that purchased 86 sweet-cases for foster children in the Mecosta County area. The idea stemmed from the Community Outreach committee, specifically from a passionate individual who was a foster child. Most foster children use trash bags to store personal belongings. With collaboration with Together We Rise, the committee got to work launching the great initiative. On December 5 & 7 the group held the sweet-cases build. During these two days the cases were decorated and assembled by individuals and student organizations. The small teams of students were able to decorate the outside of the blue bag, put in all the included goodies, and had the chance to write a personal letter. The cases included a teddy bear, fleece blanket, coloring book, flashlight, and hygiene kit. Tables lined the CLACS Office lobby with stations for people to easily stuff their sponsored sweet-case. Below are photos I took during the event of the wonderful individuals who participated in the event. Other than my role as Director of Public Relations for FSUSGA I participated as a member to decorate a sweet-case. On behalf of my organization, Ferris Public Relations Student Society of America, I helped prettify one of the 'fun-sized' blue bags.
While I was taking photos of the different groups I asked what brought them to the event. Hearing people's stories about how they knew someone in foster care, was a child themselves, or just wanted to help was heartwarming. The Sweet-Case build has made me more conscious about the foster care system and the possibilities of looking into the opportunities to adopt in the future. This was an amazing event to be apart of, seeing the passion from one individual florish into a two day affair was inspiring. An idea that came from one individual impacted the lives of 86 children in the Mecosta County area. It looks like I'll be writing down my ideas more often.
